Nyx, Goddess of the Night

Rather belated photo set but these shots are from Halloween. I can never decide what I want to be in time to create a killer costume so I always end up throwing something together last minute. Fortunately I had this beautiful black prom dress hanging in my closet which provided the perfect canvas for me to try out some new makeup and styling ideas. You can’t tell since the photos are all black and white but my lipstick is actually a beautiful deep blue called Smoking Gun. For a color picture (and closeup of the makeup) you can check out my Instagram @fionaisabelle! The tattoos are hand drawn with liquid eyeliner, courtesy of myself and my friend Amy. I ended up deciding to be Nyx, Greek goddess of the Night, hence the stars and all black ensemble. I don’t know much about Nyx honestly, beyond the fact that she was a badass like most Greek goddesses. I love Greek mythology though my knowledge has dwindled over the past few years. Still I claim Artemis and Athena as my patron goddesses. They are everything I aspire to be and I send little prayers up to them every now and then.

Anyway, I’m hoping to get around to doing a few more impromptu photoshoots like this. I miss modeling (and styling). I’d love to start doing more “legit” modeling work but until then I’ll stick to the DIY amateur version! I’m grateful that there are so many platforms for amateurs like myself to put up photos. Even if it’s not professional quality, it’s a lot of fun. And that’s what really matters, right?

Let me know if there’s anything in particular you’d like to see along these lines! I’m always open to theme suggestions and trying something new. And let me know in the comments what you think of Greek mythology or mythology in general! Do you have a favorite god or goddess?

A New Year

I’ve never been great about New Year’s Resolutions. I always have a few grandiose ideas of what a new year will bring, a year where I magically acquire the discipline, focus, and luck to make all my dreams come true. I’ll eat healthy foods and stay in killer shape and book some big acting job and not have to worry about money or school. Unfortunately, things never work out quite that well.

Now I would love for 2015 to be the year where all those dreams came true, but I’m going to try to be a little more realistic this time around. Looking back at 2014, it was a bit of a mess. It had its moments, certainly, but I would say that overall the stress and frustration this year brought outweighed the rewards. So in 2015 I’m looking for a little more balance.

So with that in mind, here are a few “resolutions” for the year…

1. Let go of trying to plan everything out and go with the flow. Take some risks and don’t punish yourself if the results aren’t always what you’d hoped.

2. Get healthy but in a balanced way. I have a tendency to go to extremes when it comes to eating and exercise, which never makes me happy. More water, less sugar, more cardio BUT don’t forget to rest sometimes.

3. Strength. Physically, emotionally, mentally. Strength.

4. Graduate college!

5. Make more art. And share it. Messes and mishaps are okay because the chances of making a masterpiece are slim. Accept that.

6. Write for enjoyment instead of for school. Ditto with dancing, singing, acting, reading, you name it.

7. Be a better friend.

8. Step out of your comfort zone and be more social. Let go of trying to control what people think of you and see what happens.

9. Take the focus off yourself. I get really wrapped up in my selfish desires and problems, none of which are important in the scheme of things. I don’t need to be the best and brightest in the room. Learn that you still have worth if you aren’t the best.

10. Reclaim the magic by whatever means necessary.

Hope everyone has a lovely (and safe) NYE! xx

Guess who hasn’t blogged in months? Well hello, here we are again.

Outfit details:
Boots – Charlotte Russe // Top – Thrifted // Earrings – ASOS

A brief catch-up on my life: currently on Winter break after a crazy semester where I played my fair share of children, prostitutes, and one recurring stressed college student. Spending one last week at home eating too much and avoiding responsibilities before flying off to New York and London for three weeks.
I’m going to try to queue up a few belated outfit posts, but if you’d like to stay up to date on what I’m up to, follow me on Instagram and Twitter! Both @fionaisabelle.

Hype on Lookbook!

It’s been quite a long time since my last post. As in months. A lot has happened in that time and, at the same time, little has changed. I went on hiatus from blogging (several times actually…whoops) because I wasn’t feeling myself, didn’t feel like I had anything original to share with the world, and wasn’t feeling joy writing about or living my life. I wish I could tell you that has all changed, that I’ve gone on a magical quest that led to my being crowned Queen of the Dragons and discovering my purpose!

Alas, that is not quite the case.

However, I’ve felt inclined to get back to blogging over the past few weeks, so here I am. I’ve missed documenting my life and putting my thoughts down in writing. I’ve also missed the feedback and connections I’ve shared with people over posts. So here is my attempt at returning to that!

Kicking off with an outfit post as usual! This week marked the beginning of my Senior year of university and above is what I wore for the first day of school. The plaid shirt dress is Tommy Hilfiger, picked up this summer while visiting my grandmother in Virginia. The mustard slingbacks were a find at Goodwill and the necklace is Disney Alice in Wonderland themed!

As for school, this year has me anxious already though I’m hoping to overcome that. Unfortunately my Musical Theatre major and Dance minor are nearly complete meaning the bulk of my classes are for my International Business major and Honors thesis. It is no secret that I much prefer my artistic major, so I’m not thrilled about some of my coursework. Currently taking 20 hours and auditing 6: 3 management classes, finance, performing arts career seminar, musical theatre repertoire, rehearsal and production, voice lessons, touring a new children’s show around Kentucky, and researching for my thesis called Backwards in High Heels: Examining the Careers and Artistic Contributions of Fred Astaire’s Dance Partners. Please note the lack of dance or acting classes. But the most stressful part is figuring out whether I can graduate on time and if the classes I need will be offered in Spring. I have 30 hours left to complete, which I can hypothetically finish my the end of next Summer if the school is willing to work with me but life often doesn’t like to work out that easily, so I may be staying an extra semester in Kentucky. Not ideal for my life plans or bank account, but honestly my pride would suffer the most!

That’s enough of my rambling life update for now…kudos if you’ve read this far! If you’ve just started another year at school, I hope things are going smoothly right now! And hopefully you’ll hear more from me soon…

‘What is the Comet’ – film about Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812

Video by Tod Viele on YouTube.

I’d been hearing rave reviews about the off-Broadway show Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 for awhile now but had not taken the time to check it out. I finally had the chance last night and have fallen in love with the show! Alas I won’t make it to New York before it closes on January 19th, but if you can get to the city you should definitely try to get tickets. Watch the video for an idea of what the musical is about and listen to the soundtrack! My favorite songs are probably “Charming,” “Letters,” and “Sonya Alone.”

On the subject of New York theatre, so many shows are closing today that I have friends in or I’d hoped to see. I was hoping to catch First Date before it ended but perhaps a tour in the future? Excited to see what is next for my little friend in Annie!
Counting down until I can finally move to NYC. Just a year and a half more *bangs head into door*. I’m tentatively visiting in April though, so soon my pretty. Soon I will return…
